Semi-Supervised Learning for Ill-Posed Polarimetric SAR Classification

چکیده
In recent years, the interest in semi-supervised learning has increased, combining supervised and unsupervised learning approaches. This is especially valid for classification applications in remote sensing, while the data acquisition rate in current systems has become fairly large considering highand very-high resolution data; yet on the other hand, the process of obtaining the ground truth data may be cumbersome for such large repositories. In this paper, we investigate the application of semi-supervised learning approaches and particularly focus on the small sample size problem. To that extend, we consider two basic unsupervised approaches by enlarging the initial labeled training set as well as an ensemble-based self-training method. We propose different strategies within self-training on how to select more reliable candidates from the pool of unlabeled samples to speed-up the learning process and to improve the classification performance of the underlying classifier ensemble. We evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed semi-supervised learning approach over polarimetric SAR data. Results show that the proposed self-training approach using an ensemble-based classifier that is initially trained over a small training set can achieve a similar performance level of a fully supervised learning approach where the training is performed over significantly larger labeled data. Considering the difficulties of the manual data labeling in such massive volumes of SAR repositories, this is indeed a promising accomplishment for semi-supervised SAR classification.

Fully Polarimetric SAR Image Classification Using Different Learning Approaches
This paper compares multilook Polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) image classification using three types of learning: a supervised, an unsupervised and a semisupervised. The multilook PolSAR pixel values are complex covariance matrices and they are described by mixtures of Wishart distributions. Tests in synthetic and real images showed that the supervised and semisupervised classifications provided the ...
متن کاملA Non-Parametric Texture Descriptor for Polarimetric SAR Data with Applications to Supervised Classification
The paper describes a novel representation of polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) data that is inherently non-parametric and therefore particularly suited for characterising data in which the commonly adopted hypothesis of Gaussian backscatter is not appropriate. The descriptor is also non-local and can capture image structure in terms of the arrangement of edge, ridgeand point-like features, to yield a ...
متن کاملFiltering Effect in Supervised Classification of Polarimetric Ground Based SAR Images
We investigated the speckle filtering effect in supervised classification of the C-band polarimetric Ground Based SAR image data. Wishart classification method was used for the supervised classification of the polarimetric GB-SAR image data and total of 6 kinds of speckle filters were applied before supervised classification, which are boxcar, Gaussian, Lopez, IDAN, the refined Lee, and the ref...
متن کاملComparison of Oil Spill Classifications Using Fully and Compact Polarimetric SAR Images
In this paper, we present a comparison between several algorithms for oil spill classifications using fully and compact polarimetric SAR images. Oil spill is considered as one of the most significant sources of marine pollution. As a major difficulty of SAR-based oil spill detection algorithms is the classification between mineral and biogenic oil, we focus on quantitatively analyzing and compa...
متن کاملLand Use and Land Cover Classification Using Radarsat-2 Polarimetric Sar Image
Traditional pixel-based classification methods yield poor results when applied to synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery because of the presence of the speckle and limited spectral information in SAR data. A novel classification method, integrating polarimetric target decomposition, object-oriented image analysis, and decision tree algorithms, is proposed for land use and land cover (LULC) clas...
